Gameday can be stressful no matter how much you enjoy playing your sport. There is always going to be the pressure to go out there and win, and that can have a detrimental effect on the mental and emotional well-being of players. It’s important, therefore, to prepare in advance so that you can be your absolute best on game day. Even if you don’t win, you can look at yourself in the mirror and know you did everything you could – you did your best.

Are You In Control?

There are some aspects of a sporting match or game that you have total control over. Other aspects are out of your hands completely, yet those are the ones that you are probably focusing on over anything else, and this does nothing but cause more stress and further worry. It might even cause lack of sleep which is the last thing you need before a big game.

Rather than worry about the things you have no control over, stick to the things that you really need to think about. These include your own attitude, your fitness level, the equipment and uniform from Custom Throwback Jerseys that you need to have ready, your positive thoughts, and any tactics you need to think about. Think about these things rather than the other team, the weather, the ground conditions, the fans, or anything else that you have no say in and that will simply take away your much-needed energy for no use whatsoever.

Trust In Yourself

You know you’re good at what you do; you wouldn’t be playing in a team (or alone, depending on the sports) if you weren’t. You’ve gotten this far on your abilities so why should gameday be any different? Remember that you need to trust in what you can do, and know that you can do it, and you’ll start with a much healthier, much more positive attitude than you might otherwise if you start to question whether you can really do this.

Don’t Focus On Technique

You’ve had all your training sessions to focus on your technique and it should be second nature by the time game day comes round. So just before the match begins is not the time to think about it. Much like cramming for an exam, if you leave learning to the last minute it won’t benefit you at all – it will simply make you more anxious and more likely to make a mistake. Do all your learning in advance and let your training take over when you’re playing. It will be a more productive and more enjoyable way to play.

Unexpected Things Will Happen

You can’t plan for everything, which is why you shouldn’t worry about certain aspects of the game. As long as you go into the match knowing that pretty much anything can happen, even the most unexpected of things, you’ll feel calmer. Go into the match feeling stressed and anxious, and you’re not going to be able to play your best at all.
