Hilo hosts its own international airport right outside the city, about 10 minutes away by car, with unfortunately no public transportation available from the airport. Along the seaside, there are many shops to buy or rent surfing gear as well as surf schools to take lessons, although the power of the waves makes the spot suitable for professionals only.
Hillo’s Breakwall is visible from Bayfront beach, but in order to get there you need to take a boat from Hilo Harbour. It is easy to find, with a world class powerful wave quality, taking both right and left directions.
The spot offers a good wind direction and swell size that starts at over 3.5 m/12 ft and holds up to 5 m/16 ft and over, while the bottom of the sea is rocky. Due to its level of difficulty, the break-wall spot is not crowded at all during weekends. Surfers should be careful of rip currents, rocks, boats and sharks.
