Near LaPlace, an awesome ATV area, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is becoming very popular among quad bikers. Bonnet Carre Spillway has over 400000 visitors each year, enjoying the spillway. It is a huge area of 850 ac/3.4 km², containing 1 mi²/2.6 km² of terrain with 20 mi/32.1 km of trails, ready to welcome you and your quad bike.
The trails are maintained by the South Louisiana Trailblazers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The swamp-type terrain has an elevation of approximately 20 ft/6 m and mainly consists of sand and clay and it can get really muddy during wet weather.
The trails are mostly suitable for amateurs, as most of them are smooth and fast and there are also a few rough trails for experts. The ATV area opens all year long during daytime only and there is no entrance or riding fee. Camping is permitted only at the Saint Charles Parish Recreation Pavilion Area.
There is no camping fee, but a permit is required, which can be obtained by calling 001 – 985 – 783 – 5090. There are some limitations, in order to use the trail system. There is a 90 db noise limit and an end cap or spark arresting silencer are mandatory for all vehicles. It is highly recommended to spend at least a full day, in order to enjoy the trails and discover all the hidden mud treasures.
