The park is an international World Heritage site and provides the visitors with several exciting hiking opportunities. Halemaumau Trail is 7 mi/11 km long, three to six hours round trip walk and starts on the right side of the Volcano House. Hiking there is an amazing and challenging experience, not suitable for beginners.
The trail descends for 400 ft/120 m through rainforest then crosses the deserted Kilauea Caldera and ends up at Halemaumau Overlook. You will be amazed by the lava flows and the steaming vents, along with the variety of nature in the rainforest. The trail is well marked and easy to follow but you must always stay alert of sulfur fumes.
Hikers should wear hiking boots, long trousers, take a lot of water and snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat because the sun can be very intense. Due to the unstable terrain conditions, it is recommended, before you choosing Halemaumau Trail, to consult the Volcano National Park website for any park alerts that might prevent you from following this route.
