The trail starts 500 ft/152.4 m of HI-11 near a large avocado tree where you can leave your car. It is a 4 mi/6.4 km long out and back trail, about two hours hiking with an elevation gain at 1280 ft/390 m. This hike does not require high skills, but a good physical condition is essential because the way back is a real workout.
As you go down the trail, you walk through open lava fields, tall grass, steep rocks and dry land forest with panoramic views of Kona Coast. The trail ends at one of the worlds most beautiful ocean beaches, Kealakekua Bay, where you can dive to cool off and snorkel.
The sea is crystal clear and you can admire corals and colorful tropical fish. Hikers should take water and snacks with them and wear good, non slippery, hiking shoes. Don’t forget your snorkeling gear.
