Longmont is located northeast of the county seat of Boulder, about 31 mi/49.9 km north-northwest of the Colorado state capitol in Denver. It is a home rule municipality in Boulder, Weld Counties in the U.S. state of Colorado.

It is an easy going community only 16 mi/25.8 km away from Boulder. Cross country skiing is a very popular sport in Boulder. One of the most famous trails for cross country skiing in all Boulder County is The Marshall Mesa and Community Ditch Trail.

It is located under the Devils Thumb. It is a sort of StairMaster – with – a view as David Gessner says. It follows an easy route up to Marshall Mesa, right before getting down to and crossing Colorado Highway 93, on its way to Eldorado Springs Canyon.

It is an 8 mi/12.8 km trail, ideal for beginners with a minimal elevation gain. Skill level is regarding physical level, easy and as for technical level, easy too. Trail type is out and back. The place is a landmark, so pay attention. Local maps that can be useful are USGS Luisville and Eldorado Springs.
