Hilo is an old fashioned bay front town, with tropical rainforest climate all year long and home of the Tsunami Museum, dedicated to the understanding of the 1946 Pacific Tsunami. Hilo hosts its own international airport right outside of the city, with unfortunately no public transportation available from the airport. Along the seaside, there are many shops and schools to buy, rent or repair surfing gear, as well as to attend surfing lessons if you are a beginner.
Honolii beach is ideal for all surfers, with a regional classic wave quality and consistent frequency. The waves take both right and left directions, with the wind coming from the west, southwest and the size of the swell starts working at 1.5 m/5 ft and holds up to 4 m+/12 ft. The bottom of the sea is rocky and the beach is not recommended for swimming.
Honolii beach is a popular surfing destination and provides some of the most consistent waves to be ridden, so during weekends the spot is very crowded. Surfers should be careful of sharks and rocks.
