Praia da Areia Branca is a beautiful vibrant small village, located in the Portuguese west coast, just a few miles north of Lisbon. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and with an amazing sandy coastline that stretches up to 12 km/7.4 mi long, this place is considered to be the European surfing mecca, having hosted many national and international surfing competitions.

As it is an exposed river break with regular frequency, the power of the wave is fast and fan to ride. Depending on the season, the size of the swell starts working at 1.5 m/5 ft and holds up to 2.5 m/8 ft and over.

The best swell direction is when coming from northwest, west while the best wind direction is when coming from southeast and northeast. However, it definitely works better with east offshore winds. During winter, Praia da Areia Branca’s beach has big rough waves, ideal for more experienced riders.

However, summer is the best season for beginners to take lessons or brush up their surfing skills. There are schools with professional trainers that can’t wait to introduce you into their world and their love for the open ocean.

You can also take yoga lessons on the beach and revive your body and mind along with your surf lessons that will help you find your balance and keep your head clear and focused, while riding the big waves.
