Hilo hosts its own international airport right outside the city, at about 10 minutes away by car, with unfortunately no public transportation available from the airport. Along the sea side, there are many shops to buy or rent surfing gear as well as surf schools to take lessons and Richardson’s beach is great spot for beginners.
The bay is reef-coral with black sand and rocks and it is a good spot if you like reef breaks. The wave quality is sometimes powerful and it takes both right and left directions. Richardson’s beach is ideal for surfers of all levels of ability with a wind direction from the East and a good swell size that starts working at 1.5-2 m /5-6 ft and holds up to 3 m+ / 10 ft+.
During weekends, the beach is ultra crowded because it provides facilities such as showers, lifeguards etc. Surfers should be careful of urchins, rip currents and sharks.
