The summit of the mountain lies above the forest line and the terrain consists of mostly lava rocks and shrubs due to its alpine weather conditions. Mana Road Trail starts in the north near Waimea Village. It is a 43 mi/69 km long rough jeep trail, about five hours drive and continues around the Mauna Kea mountain. The route starts at 3500 ft/1066 m height and goes over 8000 ft/2438 m near the Mauna Kea Visitor Center.
