Located within Taman Negara National Park in Pahang province, Malaysia’s premier park, Gunung Tahan stands at 2187 m/7174 ft and is the highest mountain in west Malaysia. With significance to its name, “Gunung” meaning mountain and “Tahan” meaning endurance, you need to have a certain level of endurance to be able to attempt climbing this mountain. There are 3 trails to the summit commonly known as the Kuala Tahan, Merapoh-Kuala Tahan and Kelatan which is a new trail.
The Kuala Tahan trail is the oldest and most scenic route which is commonly used. It is also the longest and most challenging one and a return trip would normally take seven days. To get to the summit using this route, you will have to pass 27 peaks and 7 river crossings. The Merapoh trail on the other hand is the shorter and less challenging and a return trip would take between 3-4 days while Kelatan is a new route that is shorter as well and rarely used.
Before embarking on this trip you need to ensure that you have your personal essentials with attires to combat all weather conditions… and some junk food in case you get lost in the jungle!!
