Merewhether is part of a 1590 km/987 mi length of state’s coastline, with a grand total of 892 beaches, including Sydney’s famous harbor, ocean beaches and seven of Australia’s National Surfing Reserves. Merewether Beach is one of Newcastle’s famous beaches for surfing, with the reserve stretching 2 km/1.3 mi along the spectacular coastline.
This is the home beach of four time World Surfing Champion Mark Richards and Malibu Surfboard Riding Champion, Martin McMillan. Undoubtedly, this is why Merewether Beaches have been declared as Australia’s National Surfing Reserve since March 2009. The reserve is spread from Dixon Park in the north to Burwood Beach in the south. The beach offers good beach breaks particularly on the outer bar during moderate swell while its bigger reef ”The Ladies” produces good rides up to 3 m/9 ft and will hold a south-east swell up to 5 m/16 ft.
Accessible at all times, the beach can be crowded during the weekends. Nonetheless, due to the beach’s large length, surfers will have to problem to hit the waves safely. Waves of 1.6 m/5 ft are observed throughout the entire beach, bounded by 50 m/164 ft high cliffs, fronted by wide rock platforms. The waves and the sand creates a beach, characterized by a bar, usually cut by 4-5 beach rips. The northern rip at Cooks Hill is considered to be the most prominent one.
Numerous surf clubs and training centers can be identified on the spot. There are change room facilities and a cafe/kiosk available all year round. During a two minutes walk between Merewether Beach and Merewether Ocean Baths features the historic Ladies Rock Pool and the heritage listed as Surf House.
