Latok group is surrounded by many equally magnificent peaks, all suitable for one of the most popular mountain sports, rock climbing. On the west facing north ridge of the Latok the necessary conditions for an alpine style ascent are rarely present for adequate climbing. The Latok I is situated at the north central area of Latok and was first climbed in 1979.
The North Ridge of the Latok I is steep and at 2500 m/8200 ft high. This notorious route is still unclimbed. A first attempt was made by a group of Americans and it was almost successful. Despite the lack of a summit, the lightweight style of the climb was widely admired.
Many other climbers have tried to reach this peak, however they have all failed in this venture. This still virgin area is waiting for more ”audacious” climbers.
