The park is an international World Heritage site and provides visitors with several exciting hiking opportunities. Waldron Ledge trail or Earthquake trail is an easy paved route of 1 mi/1.6 km long, about 40 minutes round trip with starting point on the left of the Volcano House.
Hiking there is an interesting experience because you walk over a part of the road of the old Crater Rim drive that was damaged during a 6.6 Richter earthquake in 1983, on Mauna Loa mountain and you can see the earth cracks. Although Waldron Ledge is a short walk, the view of the nature around Mauna Loa mountain and the Halemaumau crater in the far distance, make the hike exciting. Take water and snacks with you, as well as sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat because the sun can be very intense.
Due to the unstable terrain conditions it is recommended, before choosing Devastation Trail, to consult the Volcano National Park website for any park alerts that might prevent you from following this route.
