The town is surrounded by the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Crown Range, Haast Pass, Roys Peak and Pisa Range and is close to Mount Aspiring National Park (World Heritage Area). Despite the mountainous landscape, the climate is considered to be continental, with fairly warm summers and temperatures that can reach up to 25°C/77°F, and cold winters with frequent snowfalls.
One of the biggest ski resorts near Wanaka is Treble Cone. It is situated at 18 mi /29 km from Wanaka and 55mi/90km from Queenstown, and offers a magnificent vertical rise over the Southern Lakes. The site is open from late June to late September and offers a great variety of facilities.
With its varied terrain and the longest vertical drop (2296 ft/700 m), it consists one of the most popular destinations for snowboarding lovers.
