Fortress Mountain is one of the highest peaks in Washington State and is located in the Chiwawa Mountains Range. The top elevation of the summit stands at 8674ft/2643m high and is suitable for climbing from July to September. In order to approach Fortress Mountain, there are two routes starting from the same parking lot.
The easiest route is to hike up Buck Creek Trail that leads you to Pass no Pass Trail from where you can head to the east at the base of the mountain. Fortress mountain provides with good scramble climbing and offers also sections of loose rocks. Once you reach the top, the views of the surrounding summits and the wild alpine scenery will take your breath away.
Climbers can reach the top in one day, but for those who want to experience a true outdoor adventure, they can spend the night over, camping in many campgrounds along the Chiwawa River Road. If you visit the mountain in early season, take an ice axe and crampons with you.
