Surfing in Vilamoura, Faro, Algarve Portugal

Vilamoura lies on the Algarve coast, specifically located in the municipality of Loule in the Algarve. It is approximately 24.5km/15mi from Faro, the southernmost city in Portugal. It is the largest tourist group in Europe and well known for its opulence. There are art galleries, museum and roman ruins.

The beach of Vilamoura is long and sandy and really clean. A jetty protects this less crowded beach. Because of the weather and the good climate, Vilamoura has the right conditions for surfing. The east and southwest winds and the flat chop waves give you the opportunity to feel the adrenaline, while you are seduced by the mystery of the Atlantic ocean.

In summer there are waves with swell size from 1.5 to 4 ft (0.5- 1.3 m) and the wind blows offshore at 4%. The temperature in summer is at around 28°C/82.40°F. In autumn the waves swell size is from 1.5-4 ft (0.5-1.3 m) to 6.5-10 ft (2-3 m), and the wind blows offshore at 6%. In winter the wave swell size is 6.5-10 ft (2-3 m), but sometimes there are waves with swell size more than 10 ft (>3 m). The wind blows offshore at 5% and the temperature is at around 15°C/59°F. During spring the wave swell size is 1.5-4 ft (0.5-1.3 m) and the wind blows offshore at 8%. The beach is appropriate for all kind of surfers.

There are lots of surf schools in the area, so don’t be afraid if you feel like you couldn’t ride the waves.
