The town is surrounded by the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Crown Range, Haast Pass, Roys Peak and Pisa Range and is close to Mount Aspiring National Park (World Heritage Area). Lake Wanaka, created by glaciers more than 10,000 years ago, lies at an altitude of approximately 984 ft/300 m and is surrounded by the Southern Alps. Its deepest point is more than 984 ft/300 m and it has an overall length of 27 mi/45 km constituting the perfect destination for water sport lovers.
