Surfing in Outer Pool, Mossel Bay, Western Cape South Africa

Swell Size:
1.5-4m/5-12ft
Mossel Bay is a beautiful coast, located in between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, at 400 km/248 mi of distance both ways. It is surrounded by the sunbathed peninsula and the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean. It offers a mild climate all year round, making it a perfect winter break destination. The weather is influenced by the Aghulas current of the Indian Ocean and by the presence of the Outeniqua mountains.

The Outer Pool is considered to have consistent waves in Mossel Bay and one of the best  in South Africa. What makes it popular with surfers is its world class powerful waves, the length of the ride and the barrel at the bottom section. It works best on low and mid tide with predominant southwest winds.

The route here is mostly a point break right direction and accommodates the experienced surfer. Swells start working at 1.5 m/5 ft and holds up to 4 m/12 ft. During the summer months of November to February, it can get really crowded but still doable. Hazards here include urchins, rocks and sharks.
