The town is surrounded by Lake Wakatipu and the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Ben Lomond. Despite the mountainous landscape, the climate is considered to be oceanic, with warm summers and temperatures that can reach up to 30°C/86°F, and cold winters with frequent snowfalls.
One of the biggest ski terrains, dedicated to snowshoeing, is Snow Farm. Situated just outside Cardrona village at an altitude of 1500 m / 4921 ft, it is 55 km / 34 mi away from Queenstown and 35 km / 21 mi from Wanaka.
The site is open from late June to early October and offers a great variety of facilities and activities. You can enjoy snowshoeing inside the huge area of Snow Farm for a couple of hours to overnight adventures, or pass the site’s boundaries and head towards Mount Pisa (1964 m / 6443 ft). Choose from the existing trails or create your own, experiment and learn how to read the snow.
Try the 2 km/1 mi Musterers flat trail or the 12 km / 7 mi River Run and Loop, which runs through Meg River Valley. Enjoy the breathtaking alpine view!
