The west side of the island boasts the most popular dive sites in the Cayman islands, due to the diversity of the dives and the calm sea conditions. The Kittiwake was a submarine rescue vessel that was transferred from the US Maritime Administration to the Cayman Islands, some years after she sunk, in order to become an artificial reef.
Nowadays, it is located in marine park that is protected under law in Cayman. Kittiwake is one of the best wreck sites in the Caribbean, as it is totally safe and accessible to divers of all experience levels and even snorkelers. Novice divers can explore the first two levels, while advanced divers can experience the lower decks. There are many machines, generators, ladders and winches that have been preserved almost intact. The wreck is home to schools of groupers, horse-eyed jacks, angelfish and moray eels.
The average water temperature varies from 78°F/25.5°C in winter to 90°F/32.2°C  in summer, providing excellent diving conditions all year round. The average depth of the site is 15 m/49.2 ft and the maximum depth is 19.5 m/64 ft. Bear in mind that you have to pay an entrance fee from a licensed operator, in order to visit the spot. Finally, there are many diving centers in the area that offer a wide variety of services, from lessons to gear rentals. Note: be careful of boat traffic.
