Hilo has its own international airport right outside the city, at about 10 minutes away by car, with unfortunately no public transportation available from the airport. Along the sea side, there are many shops to buy or rent surfing gear as well as surf schools to take lessons although the fast power of the waves is not recommended for beginners.
4Miles beach is ideal for experienced surfers with a regional classic wave quality taking both right and left directions. The spot offers a north west, west wind direction and the swell size holds up to 2 m+ / 6 ft+.
The bottom of the sea is coral with sharp rocks and sand. 4Miles is a popular surfing destination so during weekends is usually crowded. Surfers should be careful of sharks.
