The meaning of Cenote is a deep natural pit which is the entrance to the caverns. As for Dos Ojos, meaning two eyes, refers to two neighboring cenotes which are connected into a large cavern. These two cenotes appear like two eyes into the underground. In total, there are 28 known cenotes.
The documented underwater extension of the cave system is 82 km/50.9 mi long. Dos Ojos is being listed in the top ten of the longest underwater cave systems in the world. It also lies parallel to and north of another one cave system that is called ”San Actum”. In 1996, cave explorers discovered the deepest known cave passage in Quintana Roo that is contained in Dos Ojos. The depth averages to 119.1 m/390.1 ft and is located in ”The Cenote Pit”.
The maximum depth around Dos Ojos Cenotes is at 21 m/68.9 ft. Some areas of the cavern that you should visit are the “Wakulla Room”, the “Beyond Main Base passage”, “Jill’s room”, “The Next Generation passage” and the ”Bat Cave”. You will be impressed by the enormous stalagmites and stalactites and of course the landscape that is created from the suns’ rays, wherever they reach. There is a few variety of fish living in the caverns. The water is absolutely clear and its temperature is at about 25°C/77°F during the whole year.
