Mudjimba is a beautiful suburb of the Sunshine Coast, that took its name after a local plant, the Midyam bush. Mudjimba Island or Old Woman Island is located at about 1 km/3.28 mi off the coast and it is considered to be the best surf break in the Sunshine Coast.
On the south side of Old Woman’s Island, there is an exposed point break, that offers reliable surf conditions. It is a popular spot, that is usually crowded. Offshore winds blow from the north and the ideal swell direction is from the south. The swell sizes can start from 1 m/3 ft and holds up to 2 m/6 ft. The average water temperature is around 28°C/82.4°F in summer and around 20°C/68°F in winter.
In addition, the best tide movement is rising tide and the ideal tide position is mid and high tide.The optimum period for waves is winter. In summer, the wind blows offshore at 64%, in autumn the wind blows at 76%, in winter at 52% and in spring at 51%. The surf site is suitable for more experienced surfers and provides with left hand waves. Last but not least, to reach the Old Woman Island, it is advisable to rent a boat, as the area here is, indeed, very sharky. Note: be careful of sharks, rips and rocks.
