The Turks and Caicos Islands lie in the Lucayan Archipelago and are a British Overseas Territory consisting of eight islands: West Caicos, Providenciales, East Caicos, South Caicos, North and Middle Caicos, Grand Turk and Saly Cay. Only East and West Caicos are uninhabited. Apart from a superb tourist destination, they are also well-known as an offshore financial center. The climate of the islands is classified as marine tropical, providing relatively consistent temperatures throughout the year.
With crystal, clear waters and white-powdered beaches, Providenciales is without a doubt a world class watersport destination. Leeward, also called Emerald Point, is an excellent windsurfing and kiteboarding site, located at the eastern tip of the island.
Favored with shallow, flat waters and steady winds, between 15 knots/27.78 kph and 25 knots/46.30 kph, Leeward attracts kiters at any time of the year, especially during winter. The ideal wind directions are from the north and northeast and the best time to visit the spot is at high tide. In addition, the water temperature varies between 24 °C/75.2 °F and 30 °C/86 °F.
Leeward accommodates intermediate and advanced kiters, as there are usually strong currents in the channel. In the end, there are many kiteboarding schools operating close to the spot, where you can arrange lessons and gear rentals. Note: be careful of boats.
