Ice Climbing in Mount Shasta, Redding, California USA

Most popular route:
Avalanche Gulch
Mount Shasta is located in northern California, east of Interstate 5 along SR89, between Mount Shasta city and McCloud city, California, USA.

Mount Shasta is inside Shasta – Trinity National Forest and the second highest volcano in the Cascade Range. It is the perfect place to go ice climbing. Mount Shasta has over 15.000 summit attempts, created every year. Only 1/3 of them is successful.

One of the least difficult and most popular routes is Avalanche Gulch. Although you need an ice axe and crampons for all the routes, you don’t need to have any mountaineering experience in order to make it through. Shasta is close to other mountains and that is why the weather is unstable, mainly because of the moisture created by many clouds.

Especially in winter, weather can change rapidly. Some of the trails are Bunny Flat, Clear Creek, Brewer Creek, North Gate, Bolam, Whitney Falls and Bolum Creek.
