- ABOUT THE SPOT
Canyoning in Routeburn Canyon, Queenstown, Otago New Zealand
The town is surrounded by Lake Wakatipu and the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Ben Lomond. Queenstown and the surrounding area was the setting for the legendary films Lord of the Rings and X-Men Origins. Despite the mountainous landscape, the climate is considered to be oceanic, with warm summers and temperatures that can reach up to 30°C/86°F, and cold winters with frequent snowfalls.
If you are into extreme adventure, canyoning is one of the best activities you can experience in Routeburn Canyon, just as you get inside Mount Aspiring National Park. Grasp the opportunity to jump into the gorge and feel the thrill of going down among sharp and steep rocks.
Slide through narrow passageways, get to jump up to 19 ft/6 m high and swim during strong water flows, fight the waterfalls and learn abseiling techniques. Overall the canyon is demanding and requires good water skills and excellent physical state. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit and a towel with you!
