Amathole is an area with stunning scenic beauty and rich in history. Located in the Eastern Cape, it has diverse landscapes ranging from mountains and rivers to beaches, forests and estuaries. Hidden gems include the majestic rainforest, which is protected to date. Indigenous forest and breathtaking waterfalls are a must see in this region.

Hogsback offers 229 routes with spectacular views, ranging from within 20-45 minutes on hard delorite rock.

Rock climbing at this spot is a must do!! Among them 36 bolted and 5 waterfall sections are included. Graded from 12-27, it is also suitable for children and rock climbing is an all year round activity here.

The must do classics here include Kursk (20), Diamond on the soles of your shoes (19), Fame and Fashion (18), Bad influence (19) and Stew’s route (18). It is advisable during summer season, to start climbing early in the morning to avoid the heat. During winter the spot records some low rainfall.

How to Get to Destination

BY CAR FROM East London
90km ( 56miles) 1hour 14 minutes
Head northwest towards Mcbeath Rd and take the 3rd left onto Curtis Rd. Then take the 3rd right onto Main Rd merging with N2 toward Mtatha. Take exit 1049 toward North Express Airport and turn right onto N6 turning left to take R352 and continue to then turn right onto Amathole.
