Buxton is a beautiful spa-town, located in Peak District, about an hour drive from Manchester. It has the highest elevation compared to other surrounding towns, with daytime temperature around 2°C/35.6°F lower than Manchester. Cats Tor is a popular paragliding site, that is situated close to Buxton. If you are a nature lover and at the same time wishing to feel the adrenaline rush, then you should visit this place!
The take off altitude is at 507 m/1662.9 ft above sea level and the take off point is found at 53°16’50” (53.2807)N; 2°0’32” (2.009)W. In addition, the landing point is found at 53°17’11” (53.2864)N; 2°0’38” (2.0108)W, at an elevation of 462 m/1515.3 ft. Note that, the site is open to Peak Soaring Association and its club members. So, if you want to practice paragliding from Cats Tor, it is advisable to first contact the club. The best wind directions come from the west, southwest and northwest.
Furthermore, there are paragliding schools and centers with qualified instructors, willing to teach you everything you need to know about this adventurous sport. In the end, the ideal periods for paragliding are during spring and summer months.
