Surfing in Chocks Beach, Hilo, Hawaii USA

Skill level:
Beginners and advanced
Wave quality:
Normal
Chocks beach is located in Hilo, in Hawaii, which is the most populated city of the island. Hilo is an old fashioned bay front town, with tropical rain forest climate all year long, and home of the Tsunami Museum, dedicated to the understanding of the 1946 Pacific Tsunami.

Hilo hosts its own international airport right outside the city, at about 10 minutes away by car, with unfortunately no public transportation from the airport. Along the sea side, there are many shops to buy or rent surfing gear as well as surf schools to take lessons and Chocks’ beach is ideal for beginners.

The bay is reef coral with very shallow water so you will need to walk out but the break is just outside. The wave quality is normal with a left direction and fun power. Swell size starts working at 1.0 m-1.5 m / 3 ft-5 ft and holds up to 2.5 m+ / 8 ft+ and its direction is north, north-east and north-west.

Because of its easy going waves during weekends, there are just a few surfers around but be careful of urchins, rip currents and rocks.
