The Gorge Arini with a length of 4 km is situated near the built-up area Spilia, 2 km away from Arini. The morphology of the ground is such that Kompori hill is almost adjacent to the opposite hill of Spilia and both of them seem to be hugged. Out of this structure that was created by nature a deep ravine was formed from the old days, perhaps during the geological period, almost pathless, that reminds to the visitor the wonderful Samaria gorge. Through this narrow gorge, the waters of the river Anigros pass, which river springs from the mountain Minthi and flows into the Ionian Sea. Due to the heavy winters of the past and the abundant waters of the river, Gerania lake was formed at that place, of a relevant size and depth, which had been named “swimming school” by the young people of the village, because in this lake, they were taking their first swimming lessons.
The Canyon is located in the wider area of Xylokastro and is ideal for beginners who want to try and live a unique experience. This particular canyon has water supply all year round, surrounded by rich flora and fauna. It has only 3 technical descents using a rope, the largest one not exceeding 9 meters, and 2 great natural slides.
According to Greek Mythology when Rhea gave birth to Zeus, she gave him to nymph Neda, who was a goddess of the waters, to protect him from the husband, Saturn. Neda nursed the infant along with nymphs Theisoa and Agno and she bathed and washed him at Lykeo river, who later got her name, Neda river! Neda is one of the most underestimated rivers in Greece and still a hidden gem! It’s a perfect choice for canyoning or river trekking.
Neda is relatively close to Kyparissia and Zacharo, a nice summer resort with an impressive castle. From there you follow the route to mountain village of Platanias and there a narrow road leads visitors to the canyon of Neda. It’s charming and unpredictable with beautiful waterfalls, which appear suddenly in front of your eyes and small ponds with crystal clear turquoise waters are formed.
The old stone arch bridge marks the start of the hike. And what a hike! The path marked by informative signs and it goes to the edge of the canyon, where you come across the small waterfall with blue-white waters (it’s because of rocks!). In the depth of the canyon appears another bigger waterfall, which throw the water from a height of about 20 meters!
The overall time for the crossing the gorge from the beginning to the end is estimated between 7 and 8 hours. In some places walking inside the Neda river is unavoidable, while in other points swimming is absolutely necessary!
The fauna of the region is rich in variety and you can often see hares, birds, beautiful fish and crabs. Sometimes you can also see blue dragonflies and as they fly over the water which this makes the whole scenery dreamed!
Kallithea canyon is near the Village of Kallithea in Peloponnese close to Xylokastro Town. It’s a beautiful canyon with water throughout the year. It’s more technical with 21 descents (highest 20 m) with abseils, a few jumps and 2 slides. It has all kinds of waterfalls. Some are curved, a couple of them need more experienced canyoners and a third can be descended with a tyrolle an traverse. Besides the technical issues the canyon is very beautiful with nice rocky formations, turquoise color waters and tree seven inside the canyon.
