Wenatchee is the largest city of Chelan County, located in North Central Washington and lies on the west side of the Columbia River. The city is also known as the Apple Capital of the world, due to the valley's many apple cultivations.

Big Chiwaukum Mountain is the highest peak of the Chiwaukum Mountains. The top elevation of the mountain is at 8081 ft/2463 m, suitable for climbing all year long. In order to approach the West Route, you hike the White Pine Creek Trail and on the marked junction, you follow the Wildhorse Trail that leads you to the mountains base.

Big Chiwaukum via West Route is an easy approach, providing with an interesting rocky scramble, suitable for all skill levels. It is a rewarding climb because once you reach the unassuming peak, you can admire a wonderful view of the mountains and the lakes around in an alpine scenery.

The summit can be reached in one day, but for the most adventurous climbers, this climb can be combined with overnight camping. If you visit West Route in early season, you will need an ice axe and crampons.
