Wanaka is a small town in Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand, situated on the south side of Lake Wanaka.

The town is surrounded by the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Crown Range, Haast Pass, Roys Peak and Pisa Range and is close to Mount Aspiring National Park (World Heritage Area). Despite the mountainous scenery, the climate is considered to be continental, with fairly warm summers and temperatures that can reach up to 25°C/77°F, and cold winters with frequent snowfalls.

If you are into extreme adventures, canyoning is one of the best activities you can experience in the wider Wanaka area. Wilkin Canyon is situated on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. You will be transferred on top of the canyon by a helicopter and start your adventure from there.

Grasp the opportunity to descend into the gorge and feel the thrill of going down among sharp and steep rocks. Slide through narrow passageways, get to jump and swim during strong water flows, fight the waterfalls and learn abseiling techniques. Overall the canyon is demanding and requires good water skills and excellent physical state. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit and a towel with you!

Note: Private area. No public access.
