The town is surrounded by Lake Wakatipu and the awe-inspiring Southern Alps, with spectacular mountains such as the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Ben Lomond. Queenstown and the surrounding area was the setting for the legendary films Lord of the Rings and X-Men Origins. Despite the mountainous landscape, the climate is considered to be oceanic, with warm summers and temperatures that can reach up to 30°C/86°F, and cold winters with frequent snowfalls.

One of the biggest ski resorts near Queenstown is Cardrona. Situated on the Cardrona Valley Rd, it is at 58 km/36 mi from Queenstown and at 34 km/21 mi from Wanaka. The site is open from late June to early October and offers a great variety of facilities.

With its varied terrain and a total number of 8 lifts, it consists one of the most popular destinations for snowboarders. It has 2 half-pipes (try the legendary 6-7 m/19-22 ft super pipe) and 3 terrain parks. Perfect for beginner to advanced level boarders (trails: Westons Gap and Over Run for beginners, Eagle Rock, Gravity Cross and Highway 89 for intermediate boarders, Arcadia Chutes and Powder Keg for advanced riders). Enjoy the breathtaking alpine view!
