North Head is the northern headland of the entrance to Sydney Harbor. All along this section, there are several excellent dive sites.

Sponge Gardens is a sponge covered reef close to Old Mans Hat dive spot. The depth of North Head Sponge Gardens ranges from 7 m/22 ft to 26 m/85 ft.

Amazing marine life can be seen here including southern fish, weedy sea dragon, giant cuttlefish, wobbegongs and octopus. It is considered to be one of the most extensive undersea reefs along the Sydney Harbour shoreline.

As the name suggests, many red, green and yellow sponges grow on this outstanding reef. The best period to dive is when north to north east winds are blowing. Apart from diving, there is a variety of activities, attractions, restaurants and bars available along Sydney’s northern peninsula. Note: book a boat dive in one of the many scuba schools located in the area.
