Ardrossan Barge is the ideal location for spearfishing fans. The Ardrossan barge was sunk on purpose at the southeast of the town back in 1984 in order to replace access to the historic Zanoni shipwreck site.
This is the best spot for big snapper’s hunters for many years. There are also nice salmon around the end of the bulk loading jetty. Reds up to 15 kg/33 lb are caught here during the Christmas period each summer, as well as slimy mackerel, whiting and the occasional large mulloway.
Best times to visit the barge during the day are dusk and dawn. However big snappers can be caught throughout the night, particularly around tide changes. Spear-fishermen should keep an eye out for great white sharks, which are common visitors when the snapper run is at its peak. The spot is recommended for advanced practitioners.
