Bantry Bay is a natural bay that is situated in County Cork. The bay extends approximately 35 km/22 mi from northeast to southwest into the Atlantic Ocean. Mount Gabriel lies on the Mizen Peninsula, located to the north of the town of Schull and to the south of Bantry Bay. If you have a passion for paragliding, then you should definitely visit this spot.
From the peak of the mountain, you can admire the stunning views over Schull Harbour and Long Island Bay. But that is not all, as the location offers spectacular views of the Roaring Water Bay and its many beautiful islands. There is not a designated launch area, but there are many grassed places, where you can launch, facing into the wind.
The spot takes almost any wind direction, but the best wind directions are from the north, northeast and east. The take off altitude is at 385 m/1262 ft above sea level and the take off point is found at 51°33’30” (51.5586)N; 9°32’24” (9.5402)W. The landing point is found at 51°33’48” (51.5635)N; 9°32’41” (9.5448)W, at an elevation of 195 m/639.6 ft. Last but not least, Mount Gabriel is appropriate for more advanced pilots. Note: be careful of overhead wires in the landing fields.
